Today’s sentence Hi! This is the last in the current series on strange things you might hear if you visit England. Cobblers! Notes Cobblers is an exclamation. It means the same as rubbish and bollocks. Bollocks is the most vulgar. Rubbish is not vulgar. Cobblers is somewhere between the two. So, if you think that something someone says is “rubbish” or untrue or, perhaps, just plain stupid, you could say “cobblers!” You could also say, “what a load of old cobblers!” It means the same as “what a load of old bollocks,” but, as I say, it is marginally less vulgar. Incidentally, cobbler is an old-fashioned word meaning “shoe mender.” It’s not really used these days to mean that. I’ve no idea why this expression exists! OK, I hope this series has been useful. Today’s sentence Hello again – how are you today? Here’s today’s new sentence. Cough up! Notes This is a strange expression and, now I come to think of it, isn’t exactly all that polite. It means, “pay (me) the money.” Imagine you are collecting money at work for someone’s birthday. One person says, “oh, sorry, I forgot my wallet today.” That’s what he says every time you collect money for someone. You know he has his wallet really. So you say, “come on, cough up!” Like I say, it’s a bit impolite. That’s it! We’ll look at another one tomorrow. See you then!
