Learn English – Podcast: Is that an express train or a local train?

Today’s sentence Hello. How’s it going? Here’s today’s train-travel sentence. Is that an express train or a local train? Notes This can make a big difference to journey times. An express from London to Brighton will stop only at Brighton. A local train from London to Brighton will stop at around 67 stations in between, adding about four hours to your journey. Perhaps I exaggerated a little in the last sentence, but you get the picture. OK. Tomorrow we’re going to make sure you get on the right train! See you then! Learn English – Podcast: I’d better make tracks.

Today’s sentence Hi. How’s it going? This is the last in the current series on phrasal verbs. I’d better make tracks. Notes To make tracks. OK, this isn’t really a phrasal verb, is it? It’s just an expression. It means leave. Tracks mean footprints – imagine if a dog walks in snow – he leaves marks / footprints / tracks in the snow. It means “I have to go (away from here.)” It’s an informal expression. Well, that’s the end of the series on phrasal verbs. I hope it was useful. We’ll start a new theme tomorrow. Learn English – Podcast: Is there a courtesy bus to the hotel?

Today’s sentence Hi, how are you? It’s worth asking this if you’re going to stay in a hotel and not a B&B – it will save you time and hassle… Is there a courtesy bus to the hotel? Notes OK – a courtesy bus. This is a free bus which will take you to your hotel. It’s a bit unlikely there’ll be on to take you to a B&B or hostel, but it’s worth asking, isn’t it? You never know. If there isn’t a courtesy bus, you might want to ask: “Can you tell me how to get there?” Tune in tomorrow for the next sentence in the series. See you tomorrow!
